The Bands, 2008

Heres the story, although I'm not too sure about the times.... we tried to have less bands to give each one more time.........

11 AM...Welcome

Just a little song and a welcome from Mambo Balam. After Roberto gave his little speech and played a bit on his flute, the juices started flowing. With the help of Tim Silven and Ezzie, it was a great way to get things going..

11:45 AM... Don Nito de Leon

Don NitoDon Nito came back this year with an excellent classical marimba group made up of some of the teachers from Santiago. Doña Bernabela recited a poem to the lake and the band played several of Nito's original tunes.

12:10 PM...Musicosas

musicosasThis year we programmed Musicosas early because we knew that Kike would be playing all day anyway! Everyone wants him to play with them. This year, in addition to a great percussion set, there was a great vocal duet with Marta and Terry

1:00 PM...Aj tzutjilaa

AjtzutjilaAj tzutjilaa is a group who play Tijax music in the cofradias... they play the "Songs of the Earth", the ancient sacred teaching songs of the Maya T'zutujiles. They capture the essence of everything that is tzutujil.

1:50 PM....Kevin Warner and Friends

KevinThis was a hot instrumental jazz set that set the crowd to dancing. Kevin gets chord combinations out of his guitar that make your body vibrate. Together with Marco Solo (Bass), Kike y Joba on percussion and Willy Gomez on drums, and with Lenin doing the sound, they sounded better than ever.

2:40 PM....Baraka Tum

This group was a very pretty surprize.Baraka Tum It is made up of a multinational grup of musicians who work in San Marcos La Laguna. They play samba and Bossa Nova in a sweet acoustic style, with classical brazilian acoustic guitar, vocal, flute, and percussion.

Festival Atitlan donated 100% of the proceeds(See the Accounting page for details)of the 2008 Festival Atitlán to K'aslimaal, the comittee to rebuild Hospitalito Atitlán, that was destroyed in the mudslides of 2005.

3:30 PM....LeRoy Mack band

LeRoy Mack

LeRoy is a native of southern California and has been playing Bluegrass for forty years. This presentation at the festival was the first time that this kind of music has been seen live in Santiago, and everybody loved it. He is a true master of the Dobro, and this group demonstrated that bluegrass is still very alive and gets people moving.

4:20 PM...La Trova Del Lago

La Trova del LagoLa Trova del Lago has grown and progressed. Their material is evolving and their instrumentation is becoming more interesting as time goes on. Together with the founder,Juan Sisay on vocals and guitar, the harmonies and guitar magic of Carlos Rangel, flautist Roberto Luz, and a great percussionist, the group has transformed into a very solid profesional band.

5: 10 PM...Brian Howe from Bad Company

Brian HoweBad Company was one of the strongest Rock bands of the 70s y 80s. We have had the good luck that Brian has decided to make the lake his home, and he invited guitarrist Dean Aicher who came from Miami specially to be with us. They did a classic Rock set and, although it was done "unplugged" they showed us all why the group was so popular. What a voice!!! It was also very amusing to watch the ladies (of all ages) flocking around to talk......

5:30 PM.....Canopus

The music of Canopus seems to creep out of the magic of the forest. Our little pine grove was perfect for this concert, and the elves were dancing through the trees. The jazz thet they are playing is in evolution, and the band is growing artistically with each presentation. The instruments come in and out like a vision in the fog, and Andreas lovely voice lifts above it to remind us that it is all part of the illusion.....

6:20 PM....Nayno

ainoThis concert marks a return of the king of Rumba-Flamenca, Rene Zimzik, back together with the maestro Carlos Rangel and their happy band of tropical gypsies.... they woke everyone back up(it had been a long day) and got everyone back up on their feet. As the evening was descending, the light show started up.

7:00 PM... Hacedor de Lluvia

Hacedor de Lluvia+Once again we were joined by Ranferi Aguilar and his group performing "Hacedor de Lluvia", based on a tzutujil maya legend. Ranferi Since the sound production was so good, you could hear all of the traditional instruments and bird sounds. This is another very fine Guatemalan cultural experience.

8:05 PM......Mambo Balam

Mambo BalamThis was just a tune (White Rabbit) with Tim, Ezzie, and Roberto

8:15 PM......Saraguate

Saraguate

SaraguateSaraguate is a great big little band that has its fingers right on the young Guatemalan beat. Their rythm is very infectious and everyone got up and started to dance. Cumbia!!!!

Saraguate is: Montecristo (acordeon and keyboards), Kique (Guitar and kena) and Pablo (Vocals and percussion).

9:00PM...Strate Crooked

strate This was our first presentation of T-Li and their group of poets from Guate and L.A. at the festival and they surprized everyone with their positive social revolutionary message formed around strong music with all of the frustration and rythm that comes with modern latinamerican youth.

10:05 PM....Iguanamanga

IguanamangaReggae Chapin! This is the best Reggae band in Guatemala! This year there have been some personnel changes, but it sounds even BETTER!!!! The band continued its fine tradition of delivering straight ahead Latino dreadness. They were joined by a fabulous tenor saxophone player who was visiting from Mexico and who didn't leave his name.

11:00 PM....Method to the Madnez

Ezzie and company are back!!! Their music just keeps on changing. This time around it is a very hot and punky set. This year Ezzie concentrated on her vocals and violinmethod, and turned the guitar playing over to, who drives the music with her own touch. Their fans had been waiting for this concert, as they haven't been playing much lately, and the crowd just erupted! Rock on!!!!! A perfect end to the music.

12:00 PM until ? Festival de Cine ATI

Our friends from ATI set up a thetre and were showing films to those who weren't ready to sleep. Earlier they had been showing cartoons to the kids and anyone else who was tired of dancing. Besides, there were people jamming at the fires that we set up at the campgrounds all night long. Early on sunday morning, those who were awake pitched in and picked up trash GRACIAS!!!!!!! This is the kind of energy that we need!!!
